Cheapest way to start with Meshtastic (2026)
You can get on a Meshtastic mesh for under $20, but the cheapest boards are bare circuit boards. Here's what you actually get at each price, using prices we checked on the sellers' own stores.
Quick answer: If you're comfortable with a bare board, the Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 & Wio-SX1262 kit ($15.97) is the cheapest entry. If you want something you can clip to a backpack today with no tinkering, the RAK WisMesh Tag ($39.00) or Seeed T1000-E ($39.90) has the battery, GPS and a case included.

What "cheap" leaves out
- Battery: Dev boards like the Heltec V4 and the XIAO kit ship without a battery. You'll need a lithium cell with the right connector, or you can run them off a USB power bank.
- Case: A bare board in your pocket will short out or break. You'll want a 3D-printed or purchased enclosure.
- GPS: Several cheap boards have no GPS, or only a connector for an add-on module. Your phone can share its location over the mesh instead.
- Antenna: Stubby antennas are fine to start with. A better antenna is often the cheapest range upgrade.
Our pick for a first node
For most people, a ready-made pocket device is the best value once you count your time: you charge it, pair it with the Meshtastic phone app, and you're done. The two cheapest ready-made options we track are compared below.

If you like tinkering, a Heltec V4 ($22.90) plus a small battery and case is a classic, very cheap starter, and it has a built-in screen.
Before you buy
- Buy the band that's legal where you live (in the US that's 915 MHz).
- Check whether anyone near you is already running a mesh on our local groups page. A single radio on its own can only talk to other radios in direct range.
